Upper Deck followed up their inaugural Be A Player (BAP) autograph release with an even larger a 225 card set. Autographs were seeded 1:1 per pack, with parallel die-cut autographs seeded 1:7 packs. The autograph card faces match the non-autographed base set cards, while the card backs feature a certificate of authenticity. According to the
2012 Beckett Hockey Card Price Guide (21st Edition), documents suggest players signed 3,000 regular and 400 die-cut autograph cards each. The Wayne Gretzky autograph (card S-97) was initially reported at 802 regular and 99 die-cut versions, but Upper Deck later announced the actual numbers as 648 regular and 234 die-cut cards. The Mike Richter autograph (card S-191) was not inserted into packs, but was later made available via a mail-in offer.
SET STATUS: MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! (100 Percent Complete). If memory serves, I finally completed this set in 2002. As could be guessed, the final card necessary was S-97 Wayne Gretzky. I had a devil of a time finding his regular autograph. The die-cut version, despite its lower production run, seemed to be offered much more frequently.
